Is a Pet Dog Bite Safe?
Is a Pet Dog Bite Safe? The Truth Every Indian Pet Owner Must Know
Thousands of Indians say 'it was just my pet nothing to worry about' after a dog bite. After 45 years of practice, I can tell you that this assumption is one of the most dangerous in medicine. Of all the misconceptions I encounter in my rabies clinic, one is by far the most common and the most dangerous: 'It was my own pet dog so there is nothing to worry about.' This belief has led to entirely preventable deaths.
I say this not to frighten pet owners, but to give them a fact they deserve to know: a bite from a pet dog can carry a risk of rabies, and it should always be evaluated by a doctor. The comfort of familiarity is not a medical assessment.
Why People Believe Pet Dog Bites Are Safe
The logic seems reasonable on the surface. A pet dog lives in the home. It is fed, cared for, and known. It does not look sick. Surely a bite from this animal is different from a bite by a stray dog? This reasoning, while emotionally understandable, rests on assumptions that may not hold true in practice and in rabies, an incorrect assumption can be fatal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q.My vaccinated pet dog bit me. Do I need the rabies vaccine?
Consult a doctor immediately. Depending on wound category, the dog's vaccination history, and its behaviour in the following days, your doctor will recommend whether PEP is required.
Q.The dog bit me and seemed normal for 10 days. Am I safe?
If a dog remains healthy for 10 days after a bite, the risk from that bite is considered negligible. However, start wound care and consult a doctor immediately do not wait 10 days before doing anything.
Q.Is a pet cat bite safer than a pet dog bite for rabies?
The same principles apply. Cat bites are deep puncture wounds and any cat bite should be evaluated by a doctor regardless of vaccination status.
The next time your pet dog bites you however small the wound, however familiar the animal please do not rely on love and familiarity as a substitute for medical assessment. Wash the wound. See a doctor. That is
all it takes to stay safe.
