Got Bitten by a Dog or Animal? Here Is What You Must Know About Rabies – Before It Is Too Late

Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear but it is also 100% preventable. After 45 years of practice, I want every Indian family to have this knowledge. It can save a life.

Let me ask you a simple question. Has a dog, cat, monkey, or any animal ever bitten, scratched, or licked youor someone you know? If the answer is yes, this article is for you. What you do in the hours after an animal bite can mean the difference between life and death.

Over the past 45 years of practicing medicine in Delhi, I have seen families devastated by a disease that was entirely preventable. Rabies is not a rare, distant threat. It is present in our neighbourhoods, in the stray dogs on our streets, and in the wild animals around our villages. And yet, people continue to lose their livesnot because there was no way to protect them, but because of one small, avoidable mistake.

This article is the first in a series where I will walk you through everything you need to know about rabieswhat it is, how it spreads, what the common mistakes are, and most importantly, how to stay

100% safe after an animal bite.

What Exactly Is Rabies?

Rabies is a viral disease caused by the rabies virusa member of the Lyssavirus genus. It is transmitted to humans primarily through the saliva of an infected animal, most commonly through a bite. However, what many people do not realise is that a scratch or a lick on broken

skin can also transmit the virus.

Once the virus enters the body, it does not rush to the bloodstream like most infections. Instead, it travels slowly and silently along the body's nerve pathways, moving steadily toward the brain. This journey can take days, weeks, or even months depending on where on the body the bite occurred and how deep the wound was.

This is the most important point I want every reader to understand. Rabies is not a disease you can treat after it has taken hold. The window for protection exists only before the virus reaches the brain.

How Does Rabies Spread? Common Sources You Must Know

In India, dog bites account for over 95% of all human rabies cases. This makes the dogand particularly the stray dog the most significant source of rabies transmission in our country. But dogs are not the only animals that can carry and transmit the virus.

Animals that can transmit rabies:

The One Small Mistake That Costs Lives

In my four decades of clinical practice, I have observed a recurring, heartbreaking pattern. People come to me or to the emergency roomnot immediately after the bite, but days, weeks, or sometimes months later. By then, they have tried home remedies. They have applied turmeric, chilli powder, or oil to the wound. They have visited a local healer. They have been told by well-meaning neighbours that "it was just a small scratch" or "the dog looked healthy."

These delays and misconceptions are the true killers in rabies.

The rabies virus moves slowly through the nerves. This gives us a window a precious window during which the correct post-exposure treatment can prevent the virus from ever reaching the brain. But this window does not wait for convenience. Every hour of delay narrows it.

Why This Disease Demands Your Full Attention

There is no other disease in medicine that I am aware of where the outcome is quite so absolute. With rabies, once the clinical symptoms beginthe fever, the agitation, the fear of water, the confusion there is no road back. The fatality rate at that stage is effectively 100%.

And yet, with the right awareness and the right action taken within hours of exposure, not a single person needs to die from rabies. The vaccines are effective. The treatment protocol is well-established. The only thing that stands between a person and survival is knowledgeand the speed with which that knowledge is acted upon.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rabies and Dog Bites

Q.Can a scratch or lick from a dog cause rabies?

Yes. While a bite is the most common route of transmission, a

scratch that breaks the skin or a lick on an open wound or mucous membrane can also transmit the rabies virus. All three types of exposure require medical evaluation without delay.

Q.What is the first thing to do after a dog bite at home?

Wash the wound immediately and vigorously with soap and running

water for at least 15 minutes. Do not apply any substance to the wound. Proceed to a doctor the same day to begin post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Q.If the dog looks healthy, is there still a risk of rabies?

Yes. A dog can be carrying and shedding the rabies virus for several days before showing any visible signs of illness. The appearance of the animal is not a reliable indicator of safety. Always seek medical advice after any animal bite.

Q.Is it too late to get the rabies vaccine after a few days?

It is always better to start post-exposure treatment as early as

possible. However, you should still visit a doctor even if days have

passeddo not assume it is too late and do nothing. Only a doctor can assess your specific risk and advise accordingly.

Q.Is rabies treatment available in government hospitals in India?

Yes. Anti-rabies vaccines are available free of charge at most government hospitals and primary health centres across India. There is no reason to delay treatment due to cost concerns.
