How Does the Rabies Virus Travel Through the Human Body?
What Happens After a Dog Bite Step by Step
The rabies virus does not travel through blood. It moves silently through your nerves toward your brain and by the time you feel it, it is too late. Here is exactly what happens inside the body after an animal bite.
Most people assume that because there is no immediate pain or swelling after a dog bite, nothing serious is happening inside the body. This assumption is one of the most dangerous misconceptions about rabies and it costs lives every year.
After 45 years of treating animal bite patients in Delhi, I have seen this pattern repeat itself with heartbreaking regularity. A person is bitten, notices no dramatic change, waits a few days and by the
time they seek help, it is already too late.
The Rabies Virus Does Not Travel Through the Blood
Unlike most viral infections influenza, dengue, HIV rabies does not spread through the bloodstream. There is no viremia in rabies. The virus does not circulate in the blood, which is why a blood test cannot detect it during the incubation period, and why the body's immune system doesnot detect it in the usual way.Instead, from the moment it enters the body through a bite wound, it begins its slow, silent, and ultimately fatal journey through the nervous system.
Step by Step: How the Rabies Virus Reaches the Brain
Why the Incubation Period Can Be Weeks or Even Months
The incubation period of rabies typically ranges from three weeks to three months, though it can occasionally be as short as four days or as long as several years. Bites closer to the head result in shorter incubation periods. Children, due to their smaller stature, are at higher risk of a shorter incubation period which is why 40 to 65 percent of dog bite
victims are children under 15.
What Happens When the Virus Reaches the Brain
Furious(Encephalitic) Rabies
This accounts for approximately two-thirds of human cases. The three cardinal signs are fluctuating consciousness with excitement, phobic spasms including hydrophobia (fear of water) and aerophobia (fear of
air), and autonomic dysfunction.
Dumb(Paralytic) Rabies
In the remaining one-third, the presentation involves
ascending flaccid muscle weakness, urinary retention, and coma. Hydrophobia is usually absent. Both forms are progressive and fatal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q.Why can't a blood test detect rabies after a bite?
Because the rabies virus travels through nerves, not blood. There is no viremia in rabies the virus is never present in the bloodstream in detectable quantities during the incubation period.
Q.If there are no symptoms for weeks, does that mean the person is safe?
No. The absence of symptoms during the incubation period does not indicate safety. Post-exposure prophylaxis must be initiated immediately after a bite.
Q.Does the location of the bite affect how quickly symptoms develop?
Yes. Bites on the face, neck, and head result in shorter incubation periods. All bites require immediate medical attention regardless of location.
Q.Can the rabies virus be stopped after it enters the nerves?
Not directly. However, the anti-rabies vaccine and RIG stimulate neutralising antibodies that can intercept the virus before it reaches the brain which is why early PEP is so critical.
The single most important action after any animal bite:wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for 15 minutes then go directly to a doctor. That day.
